GQ – Grooming ace Ashley Streicher lets us in on how she got the Game of Thrones star ready for the red carpet
It used to be that big celebrity black tie awards shows called for clean-shaven faces. Anything else would be disrespectful, right? Downright Joaquin Phoenix-y in its disregard for the serious occasion at hand. But we’re in the age of all things bearded now and those good boy grooming moves that were deemed “appropriate” just a few years earlier, now feel, well, basic in their rule abiding-ness. And a perfect case in point of how to pull off some scruff while sporting your best tux is Michiel Huisman from this weekend’s SAG awards.
The Dutch actor, in an elegant Salvatore Ferragamo tux (featuring a swerve-y two-button DB jacket), stepped out with some more-than-stubble, less-than-mountain-man facial hair that added to his overall look’s rakish appeal. But not shaving was just the first step. To truly get ready to go in front of a throng of photographers he needed expert help. Enter Ashley Streicher, of L.A.’s popular Striiike salon. The go-to groomer used some top-notch products (lots of Tom Ford) to get Huisman’s beard and skin ready for the big night. Here’s how it happened:
“I had Michiel wash his hair and wash and exfoliate his face. That provided clean slate.
Next I applied Tom Ford Skin Revitalizing Concentrate to the skin, first warming and emulsifying in my hands then massaging into his skin and beard. I like to soften the beard with this because it makes it easy to trim.
Then I lightly scissored over the comb and trimmed up the beard. I then pressed a hot towel into skin and wiped away any stray hairs.
I used one pump of the Skin Revitalizing Concentrate and one pump of Oil-Free Daily Moisturizer, emulsified them, and massaged over his whole face, gently pushing into the skin.
I slightly dabbed on the Anti-Fatigue Eye Treatment by Tom Ford around the eyes and immediately following I dabbed a bit of Tom Ford Medium Colored Concealer over the eye cream and blended.
Lastly I combed through his beard with FAVORITE Tom Ford beard oil and also sneaked some through his hair.”
If you want to copy the look at home, Streicher advises that you leave the grooming to a professional when it comes to beard trimming and brow and or nose trimming. “It’s just always better to have someone professionally care for your face on important days like these.” But if you’re looking for a daily routine to keep your face (bearded or not) in its best shape, Streicher recommends a morning routine that includes a warm water face wash with a legit cleanser, followed by a moisturizer (with SPF) and eye cream.
